Krav Maga Instructor – Garry Yan

Garry Yan
Krav Maga Instructor
Protect-SG/Dunedin-NZ

Garry is a firm believer of the saying: “Keep it (techniques) stupid and simple”. When you are in an actual high-stress situation, 90% of what you think you know will be forgotten. Armed with a strong passion for teaching, he constantly emphasizes to his students that the aim of Krav Maga is not to escape a situation in 1 perfect piece, but to come out of it alive.

He trained in Kempo in High School, but after getting into a scuffle one day, he knew he needed something more realistic and practical. While serving his Army as an Warfare Lieutenant Officer (GBAD), he joined Protect-Singapore and studied Krav Maga under Master Instructor G.L, he shows a strong interest in cross training with other disciplines- at the moment he is training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Kyokushin Karate and Kickboxing.

Currently, Garry is based in New Zealand. He started up Dunedin Krav Maga in 2014, the only Krav Maga club in the whole South Island of NZ. He has conducted self defence courses at the Otago University Student Association as well. Along with running his own club, he has had guest appearances at the Protect-affiliated club Tactical Survival Krav Maga (Wellington, NZ). Garry is currently a medical student at the University of Otago, New Zealand, as well as a volunteer ambulance officer with St John NZ. He is also a certified security officer and has worked in various environments over the years.
